I'm Joan Ramos. I build small free websites, and I try to make each one do its job without getting in the way.

My first was Mary's Printables, a free printables site that I figured a few people might use. Then I started hearing from them. A teacher had found the worksheet her class needed. A parent was using a chart with a child who was having a tough time. Someone had printed what they needed just before they ran out the door.

What mattered to them was plain: the page was there, it worked, and it didn't ask them for anything. I've held every site since to that same standard.

Why I made a reading log builder

Reading logs come home from school all the time, and every teacher wants something a little different. One wants minutes, another wants titles and pages, and a summer reading program wants dates. Grown-ups who keep a reading journal want something calmer and tidier than a kids' sheet.

Most printable logs only fit one of those. This one lets you set it up the way you need it, and what you see in the preview is what prints.

What makes a good reading log

A good reading log is quick to fill in. If it takes longer to log the reading than to do the reading, kids stop using it. It should ask only for what you'll actually look at later, and it should show progress, because watching the rows fill up is part of what keeps a reader going.

It should also suit the reader. Young kids like big rows, stars to color and a picture to shade. Adults usually want something simple and neat.
